Introduction to philosophy
If you have an enquiring mind and spend time asking questions that there seem to be no answers for
then philosophy is the subject for you. This short course will be looking at the following questions:
• Has everything in your life been determined for you or are you actually free?
• How do you know what you think you know? Equally how do you know that your life is
not a dream?
• Is your computer more of a person than you?
• Should we value all art or only the art we agree has value?
Moral philosophy:
When you read the news do you find yourself questioning the moral principles of modern society?
This short course will introduce the philosophical ideas of utilitarianism, virtue ethics and deontology
to get you thinking whether moral principles are universal or just up to the individual to do as they
please. To help with this we will be considering the ethical issues of capital punishment, euthanasia
and animal rights. Questions to get us thinking will be:
• Is there an agreed moral standard in the world?
• Can we morally justify the killing of animals because they are not human?
• Should we be bothered about selfishness or just base our morals on what makes us
happy?
Philosophy of religion:
If you have every found yourself in a debate about whether God exists then this is the short course
for you. Step by step we will consider the arguments put forward for God’s existence while
considering the arguments from sociologists and psychologists about why God is an illusion.
Questions that will be considered are:
• Do the characteristics of the classic God make sense?
• Is it correct to claim that God exists or does the non believer have to prove the non
existence of God?
• Does religious experience account for why individuals claim that God exists?
